Jory Prum (born January 31, 1975 – died April 22, 2016) was an American audio engineer. He was very well known for his work in movies and video games. Jory owned his own recording studio in the San Francisco Bay Area. He helped create the sounds you hear in many popular games and films.
About Jory Prum
Early Life and Education
Jory Prum was born in Fullerton, California. He went to Troy High School, where he studied technology. Later, he studied sound for movies and videos. He attended the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in the 1990s. While at CalArts, Jory worked on many student films. Some of these films were shown at big festivals. For example, one film was a funny version of Schoolhouse Rock! called Political Correction. He worked on this with another student, Steven Fonti. Another film was Sea Slugs, a stop-motion animation about pirate slugs. This film was even shown on MTV's Cartoon Sushi.
Working in Video Games
After college, Jory worked at Jim Henson's Creature Shop. He also worked briefly at Disney Online. In 1999, he joined the sound team at LucasArts Entertainment Company. He worked on many Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace games. He also helped with other games from LucasArts and Lucas Learning until 2001.
After leaving LucasArts, Jory kept working on video game sound. He made sound effects and recorded voiceovers. He also mixed music and scenes for many games. Some of these games include Knights of the Old Republic. He also worked on Telltale Games' The Walking Dead: The Game. For this game, Jory and his team won an award for Best Dialogue in 2013. He also worked on The Wolf Among Us and Sam & Max games. Other projects include Double Fine Productions' Broken Age and Ubisoft's CSI games. Jory's team was nominated nine times for "Best Voice Acting" Aggie Awards. They won three times!
Working in Film
Besides video games, Jory also worked on sound for movies. He created the voice for Leo, the big bird, in Pixar Animation Studio's short film For the Birds. He was even mentioned when the film won an award at the 74th Academy Awards. Jory also worked as a foley recordist on Lost in Translation. Studio Jory
In 2004, Jory opened his own recording studio. It was called Studio Jory]. It was located near his home in Fairfax, California.
In 2014, Jory helped bring back the old sounds of the classic game Grim Fandango. This was part of a project to make the game look and sound new. He also worked with composer Peter McConnell. They recorded and mixed new orchestral music for the game. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra played the music.
Jory Prum passed away on April 22, 2016, after a motorcycle accident. The last game he worked on was 2064: Read Only Memories. This game is dedicated to him.
