Infante José of Portugal (born August 20, 1761 – died September 11, 1788) was a Portuguese prince. He was the oldest child of Queen Maria I of Portugal and King Pedro III. This meant he was the next in line to become king of Portugal.
José was known as the Prince of Brazil and also held the title of Prince of Beira. Sadly, he died from smallpox when he was only 27 years old. Because of his early death, his younger brother, Infante João, became the next heir. João later became king, and his time on the throne was very difficult. Portugal faced invasions by Napoleon, and the country lost its biggest and richest colony, Brazil.

Early Life of Prince José
José was born in a place called the Real Barraca in Lisbon. Today, the Palace of Ajuda stands there. He was named after his grandfather, who was the king of Portugal when José was born. His grandfather gave him the special title "Prince of Beira." This was the first time a male prince received this title.
When José was born, his parents were known as the Prince and Princess of Brazil. His mother was expected to become queen after the current king.
Marriage and Royal Titles
On February 21, 1777, Prince José married his aunt, Infanta Benedita of Portugal. José was 15 years old, and Benedita was 30. She was considered a good match for José, and their marriage was something King José, his grandfather, really wanted.
José and Benedita did not have any children.
Just three days after their wedding, José's grandfather, King José, passed away. His mother then became the new queen. This meant that Infante José became the new crown prince. He received the important titles of Prince of Brazil and the 14th Duke of Braganza.
Death and Lasting Impact
Prince José died at the age of 27 because of smallpox. His death deeply saddened his mother and his wife. After José passed away, his younger brother, Infante John, became the next in line for the throne and the new Prince of Brazil. José died at the Ajuda Royal Complex in Lisbon. His wife, Benedita, was known as the "Dowager Princess of Brazil" until she died in 1829.
José is buried in the Royal Pantheon of the House of Braganza in Lisbon. This is a special burial place for many members of the House of Braganza, the royal family of Portugal.
