José Álvarez Junco was born on November 8, 1942, in Vielha, a town in the Pyrenees mountains of Catalonia, Spain. When he was young, his family moved to Villalpando in the province of Zamora. He grew up there and spent his teenage years in the area.
He attended high school at the Claudio Moyano Institute in Zamora. After high school, he went to the University of Madrid. There, he studied law from 1959 to 1964. He also studied political science from 1962 to 1965.
University Studies and Mentors
During his time at the university, José Álvarez Junco had important teachers. Two of his mentors were Luis Díez del Corral and José Antonio Maravall. He later earned his PhD from the UCM. His doctoral thesis, which is a long research paper, was about the Spanish anarchist movement. Professor Maravall guided him through this work.

Retirement from Teaching
Professor Álvarez Junco was a Chair of History of Thought and Political and Social Movements at the UCM. He retired from this position in 2014. Even after retiring, his work continues to influence students and researchers.

José Álvarez Junco has received awards for his important writings. In 2002, he was given the National Essay Prize in Spain. This award recognizes excellent non-fiction writing. He also received the Fastenrath Prize in 2003.
