José Emilio Amavisca Gárate, born on June 19, 1971, is a Spanish former professional footballer. He was known for playing as a left winger or a second striker.

Amavisca played for several clubs during his career. He is most famous for his time with Real Madrid. He also played for five other teams. In total, he played 381 matches and scored 57 goals in Spain's top football leagues over 16 seasons. This included 307 games and 34 goals in La Liga, Spain's highest division.

He also played for the Spanish national team in the 1990s. He represented his country at the UEFA Euro 1996 tournament.

Club Career: Playing for Top Teams

José Amavisca was born in Laredo, a town in Cantabria. His father, Emilio, was also a footballer. José started his professional career with Real Valladolid.

Early Career and Loan Spell

Amavisca helped Real Valladolid get promoted from the Segunda División (Spain's second division) in the 1992–93 season. Before that, he spent some time on loan at Lleida, also in the Segunda División.

Joining Real Madrid: A Big Step

In the summer of 1994, Amavisca joined La Liga giants Real Madrid. At first, it seemed like he might not play much. However, he surprised everyone. In his first season, 1994–95, he scored ten league goals. He often played as a second striker alongside Iván Zamorano. Their manager, Jorge Valdano, initially thought they would be backup players. But they helped Real Madrid win the domestic league title, ending a five-year wait.

Later Years and Retirement

Over the next few years, Amavisca's role at Real Madrid became smaller. In January 1999, he moved to Racing de Santander, a team from his home region of Cantabria. He quickly became a key player for them. In the 2000–01 season, he scored seven goals, but it wasn't enough to prevent the team from being relegated.

After that, Amavisca joined Deportivo de La Coruña. He played 28 games and scored three goals in the 2002 season, when Deportivo finished second in the league. However, he played less in the following two years. He retired from football at the end of the 2004–05 season while playing for Espanyol, at the age of 34.

International Career: Playing for Spain

Amavisca earned his first cap (an appearance in an international match) for the Spanish national team on September 7, 1994. He played the entire match in a 2–1 away win against Cyprus. This game was part of the UEFA Euro 1996 qualifying matches.

Euro 1996 and Olympic Gold

He was chosen to play in the Euro 1996 finals in England. He played in three matches as Spain reached the quarter-finals. Because he was not playing as much at Real Madrid, Amavisca was not selected for the 1998 FIFA World Cup squad. His second-to-last international game was on June 8, 1997. It was a World Cup qualifying match against the Czech Republic. In that game, his manager, Javier Clemente, even played him as a left-back.

Before his senior international career, Amavisca achieved a great honor. He won the gold medal in football at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.
