Amavisca's Club Football Career
Amavisca was born in Laredo, Cantabria, Spain. His father, Emilio Amavisca, was also a footballer. José started his professional career with Real Valladolid. His team was promoted from the Segunda División (Spain's second division) in the 1992–93 season. During this time, he also played on loan for Lleida in the same league.
Playing for Real Madrid
In the summer of 1994, Amavisca joined La Liga giants Real Madrid. At first, people thought he might not be needed. However, he quickly proved them wrong. In his first season, 1994–95, he scored ten league goals. He often played as a second striker alongside Iván Zamorano. Their manager, Jorge Valdano, had initially seen them as backup players. But with their help, Real Madrid won the domestic title after four years.
Over the next few years, Amavisca's role at Real Madrid became less central. In January 1999, he moved to Racing de Santander, another club in the top league. This meant he returned to his home region. He quickly became a key player for Racing. In the 2000–01 season, he scored seven league goals. However, his efforts were not enough to stop the team from being relegated to a lower division.
Later Career and Retirement
After leaving Racing, Amavisca joined Deportivo de La Coruña. In the 2002 season, he played 28 games and scored three goals. Deportivo finished as runners-up that year. However, he played less in the next two years. This was because of veteran player Fran and new signing Albert Luque. Amavisca retired from football after playing one season with Espanyol. He was 34 years old when he retired.
Amavisca's International Football Career
José Amavisca made his debut for the Spanish national team on September 7, 1994. This was a qualifier match for UEFA Euro 1996 against Cyprus. Spain won the game 2–1. Amavisca played the full 90 minutes.
He also played in the main UEFA Euro 1996 tournament. He appeared in four matches before Spain was knocked out in the quarter-finals. Later, because he was playing less at Real Madrid, he was not chosen for the squad for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
Before his senior international career, Amavisca had a big success. He won a gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. He was part of the Spanish football team that won the tournament.
