José Antonio Pavón Jiménez facts for kids

José Antonio Pavón Jiménez (born April 22, 1754, in Casatejada, Spain – died 1840, in Madrid) was a Spanish botanist. He is famous for studying plants in Peru and Chile. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants.
Exploring New Plants
During the time of King Charles III of Spain, several important trips were made to the "New World" (the Americas) to find and study plants. José Antonio Pavón was one of the main botanists on the very first of these trips.
He traveled to Peru and Chile with another botanist named Hipólito Ruiz López. Their journey lasted many years, from 1777 to 1788. They collected and described many new plants that had never been studied before.
When scientists talk about plants that Pavón and Ruiz discovered together, they often use a special short name: Ruiz & Pav. This helps everyone know that both scientists were involved in finding and naming those plants.
Plants Named in His Honor
José Antonio Pavón's work was very important. Because of his contributions, a group of plants called a genus was named after him. This genus is called Pavonia.
Another Spanish botanist, Antonio José Cavanilles, gave the Pavonia genus its name to honor Pavón. Also, some specific plants have the name pavonii as part of their scientific name. This also helps remember José Antonio Pavón's important work in botany.
