Jose Eugenio Ellauri y Obes (born in 1834, died in 1894) was an important political leader in Uruguay. He served as the ninth President of Uruguay from 1873 to 1875.

Early Life and Career

Jose Eugenio Ellauri was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on November 15, 1834. He grew up to become a Lawyer, which means he studied law and helped people with legal matters. His father, José Longinos Ellauri, was also a well-known political figure. He served as a Foreign Minister and led the group that wrote the country's constitution.

Jose Eugenio followed in his father's footsteps. He became a key member of the Colorado Party (Uruguay). This was one of the main political groups in Uruguay at the time. Before becoming president, he worked as the Foreign Minister. He held this important job from 1868 to 1872 under President Lorenzo Batlle y Grau. As Foreign Minister, he was in charge of Uruguay's relationships with other countries.

Becoming President

Jose Eugenio Ellauri became the President of Uruguay on March 1, 1873. Being president means he was the main leader of the country. He was responsible for making big decisions and guiding the nation. His time as president lasted almost two years, ending on January 22, 1875.

During his presidency, Ellauri made some notable decisions. One of them was founding the town of Villa del Carmen. He did this by signing a special order in 1873. This new town was created in the Durazno Department of Uruguay.
