A Look at Carmen's History

Villa del Carmen has an interesting past. The town was officially started on June 10, 1874. This happened because José Eugenio Ellauri, who was the President of Uruguay at the time, signed a special order.

Early on, two things helped the town grow a lot. One was the carpentry industry, which made things out of wood. The other was the delicious wines made by a person named André Faraud in the early 1900s.

The town's official status changed over the years. On July 4, 1908, it became known as a "Pueblo," which means village. Later, on April 29, 1975, it was recognized as a "Villa," which means town.
