Durazno is an important city in Uruguay. It is the main city, or capital, of the Durazno region.

Geography of Durazno
Durazno is located in the southern part of its region. It sits where two main roads, Route 5 and Route 41, meet. This makes it easy to travel to and from the city.
The city is also near the borders of two other regions: Flores to the southwest and Florida to the southeast. It is only about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Trinidad, which is the capital of the Flores region.
Durazno is built on the southern banks of the Yi River. This river flows into the Río Negro River, which is a larger river in Uruguay.

Durazno has a humid subtropical climate. This means it has warm, wet summers and mild winters. The weather is generally pleasant throughout the year.
The city gets a good amount of rain, spread out over the months. This helps the plants and farms in the area.
Transportation in Durazno
The Santa Bernardina International Airport is located very close to Durazno. It is just across the Río Negro river. Even though it is an international airport, it did not have regular passenger or cargo flights as of 2021. This means people usually don't fly in or out of this airport for regular trips.
History of Durazno
Durazno was founded on October 12, 1821. It was first called San Pedro del Durazno. This name was given to honor Emperor Pedro I of Brazil. At that time, the area that is now Uruguay was part of Brazil. It was known as the Cisplatine Province.
Before Uruguay became an independent country, Durazno was already recognized as a villa, which means a town. Later, on July 13, 1906, its status was officially changed to ciudad, meaning a city. In May 2015, Diego Traibel was chosen as the Mayor of Durazno. He served until 2020.

Culture in Durazno
The Church of San Pedro de Durazno is a very important building in the city. It is a famous landmark. After a fire, the church was rebuilt and redesigned. An engineer named Eladio Dieste used a special building method called reinforced brick. This makes the church strong and unique.
