José Freire Falcão (born October 23, 1925 – died September 26, 2021) was an important leader in the Catholic Church from Brazil. He served as the Archbishop of Brasília from 1984 to 2004. In 1988, he became a Cardinal.

Early Life and Priesthood

José Freire Falcão was born on October 23, 1925. His hometown was Ererê in the state of Ceara, Brazil. When he was 14 years old, he began studying to become a priest. He went to a special school called a seminary in Fortaleza.

He became a priest on June 19, 1949. After that, he taught at the seminary. He also helped lead the church's worship services in his area.

Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop

On April 24, 1967, Pope Paul VI chose him for a new role. He became a bishop, first helping out in Limoeiro do Norte. He officially became a bishop on June 17, 1967.

Later that year, on August 19, he became the main bishop of Limoeiro do Norte. On November 25, 1971, he moved to lead the Archdiocese of Teresina. An archdiocese is a very large church area.

Serving as a Cardinal

Pope John Paul II made him the Archbishop of Brasília on February 15, 1984. This was a very important position. On June 28, 1988, Pope John Paul II made him a Cardinal. Cardinals are special advisors to the Pope.

He retired from his role as Archbishop of Brasília on January 28, 2004. Even after retiring, he remained a Cardinal.

In 2005, he was one of the cardinals who helped choose the next Pope. This special meeting is called a papal conclave. He helped elect Pope Benedict XVI.

Later Years and Passing

In September 2021, Cardinal Falcão became sick. He was taken to the hospital on September 17, 2021. Doctors found that he had COVID-19.

His health got worse, and he needed special medical help. He passed away on September 26, 2021, at 95 years old. His funeral was held the next day. He was buried in the cathedral's crypt.
