José Gilberto García Ruminot (born May 22, 1955) is a Chilean politician and accountant. He has held many important roles in the Chilean government. As of July 2025, he is the President of the Senate of Chile.

Early Life and Education
José García Ruminot was born in Temuco, Chile. This city is located in the southern part of Chile. He was born on May 22, 1955.
Becoming an Accountant
He studied at two different universities. First, he went to the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later, he continued his studies at the University of La Frontera. At this university, he completed a Master of Arts degree. His main profession is an accountant. This means he is skilled in managing and checking financial records.
Start in Public Service
José García Ruminot began his career in public service as a mayor. A mayor is the leader of a city or town. He served in this role for several different places.
Serving as Mayor
- He first became mayor of Toltén. This was from June 1980 to January 1982.
- Next, he was the mayor of Lautaro. He held this position from November 1984 to June 1986.
- Finally, he served as the mayor of his hometown, Temuco. His term as mayor of Temuco was from June 1986 to September 1989.
National Politics
After serving as a mayor, José García Ruminot moved into national politics. He became a member of Chile's national parliament. Chile has two main parts to its parliament: the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
Member of the Chamber of Deputies
From March 1990 to March 2002, he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile. This is similar to being a representative in other countries. He represented the 3rd District. This district included the cities of Padre Las Casas and Temuco.
Becoming a Senator
In March 2002, José García Ruminot became a member of the Senate of Chile. The Senate is the upper house of the Chilean parliament. He represented the 15th Circunscription, which covered the southern part of the Araucanía Region. He served in this role until March 2018.
Representing Araucanía
Since March 2018, he has continued to serve in the Senate. He now represents the 11th Circunscription. This area also covers the Araucanía Region. He is still a Senator today.
President of the Senate
On March 19, 2024, José García Ruminot was chosen for a very important role. He was elected as the President of the Senate of Chile. This means he leads the meetings and work of the Senate. He holds this position as of July 2025.
