Lautaro is a city and a special kind of area called a commune in Chile. It is located in the Cautín Province within the Araucanía Region. The city gets its name from Lautaro, a brave Mapuche leader. He was known as a toqui during the War of Arauco.

How Many People Live Here?
A census is like a big count of all the people in a place. According to the 2002 census by the National Statistics Institute, Lautaro covers an area of about 901.1 km2 (348 sq mi). At that time, 32,218 people lived there.
City vs. Countryside
Of the people counted in 2002, 21,071 (about 65%) lived in the city parts of Lautaro. The other 11,147 people (about 35%) lived in the countryside, which is called rural areas. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Lautaro grew by 3,493.
How Lautaro is Governed
Running the Commune
Lautaro is a "commune," which is a local area that manages its own affairs. It's like a local government unit in Chile. A group called the communal council helps run Lautaro. This council is led by an alcalde, who is similar to a mayor.

The alcalde is chosen directly by the people every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde of Lautaro was Renato Hauri. He worked with several council members to make decisions for the city. These council members included:
