José Joaquín Fabregat (born in Torreblanca in 1748 – died in Mexico in 1807) was a talented engraver and cartoonist. He was from a region in Spain called Castelló. Fabregat became famous for his detailed artworks in a time when Mexico was known as New Spain. He started his art journey by studying at the Academy of San Carlos.

Fabregat's Artistic Journey

José Joaquín Fabregat began his art studies at the important Academy of San Carlos. He quickly showed great skill. In 1772, he won an engraving prize at the Academy of San Fernando. Just two years later, in 1774, he became a Supernumerary Professor at the same academy. This was a big achievement!

Fabregat continued to excel. In 1781, he won the Merit Prize from the Academy of San Carlos. His talent was recognized far and wide. In 1788, he moved to Mexico. There, he was chosen to be the Engrave Director at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos. This was a very important role.

Fabregat worked with some of the best printers of his time. These included Antonio Sancha, Joaquín Ibarra, the Real Printing in Madrid, and Benito Monfort from Valencia. His work helped bring many books and images to life.

What Fabregat Created

Fabregat was known for his many detailed engravings. An engraving is a type of art where an image is carved into a surface, usually metal. This carved surface is then used to print the image onto paper. Many of his works are now kept in places like the University of Navarra.
