José Mário Branco (born May 25, 1942 – died November 19, 2019) was a famous Portuguese singer, songwriter, actor, and music producer. He was known for his folk and protest songs.

About José Mário Branco

José Mário Branco was born in Porto, Portugal. His parents were primary school teachers. From a young age, he became very interested in politics.

In the early 1960s, Portugal was under a strict government called the Estado Novo dictatorship. This government did not allow people to speak freely. José Mário Branco was against this government. He also disagreed with the colonial war that Portugal was fighting.

Because of his political views, he had to leave Portugal in 1963. He went to live in France. While in France, he met and worked with other musicians. Some of these were Sérgio Godinho and Zeca Afonso. He helped produce and record their music at the Château d'Hérouville studios.

In 1974, a big event happened in Portugal called the Carnation Revolution. This revolution ended the dictatorship peacefully. After this, José Mário Branco was able to return home to Portugal. He helped start a music group called GAC – Grupo de Acção Cultural. He also wrote music for many theatre plays.

José Mário Branco passed away on November 19, 2019, at the age of 77. He died from a stroke.
