Early Life and Character
José Maceo was born in Oriente Province, Cuba. He was the third child in the Maceo Grajales family. His family taught him about honesty and freedom. These values helped shape him into the person he became.
José started his military career at age 19. This was during the Ten Years' War (1868-1878). He quickly rose through the ranks. After the Baraguá Protest, he became a colonel. People who knew him said he was strong and serious. But he also had a kind smile. He cared deeply for his soldiers. José was known for being brave and always leading the way in battle.
Fighting for Freedom
José Maceo was a skilled warrior. He was excellent with a rifle and a machete. He was also a very good horseman. These skills made him a true leader. He was the only one in his family to fight in all three wars for Cuba's independence. He earned many scars and a long record of service.
He became a general in April 1895. José played a big part in the Invasion of Guantanamo. He also fought in battles like Rejendón de Báguanos.
José stood by his brother, Antonio Maceo, during the Baraguá Protest. Even during times of peace, called the "Fertile Truce," he kept working for independence. He helped plan for freedom from outside Cuba. For example, he was part of the Plan of San Pedro Sula from 1884 to 1886.
José and his brother Antonio landed in Duaba to restart the Cuban War of Independence. They fought many battles in the Oriente Province.
A General's Victory and Loss
After a fight at Alto de Palmarito, José got separated from his group. He traveled through forests and streams. He then found other Cuban fighters (Mambises) in Guantanamo. Later, he met important leaders like José Martí and Máximo Gómez.
On April 25, he defeated an enemy group in Arroyo Hondo. Just three days later, he was made a Major General. José and Antonio Maceo won a big victory. This was at the Battle of Sao del Indio on August 31, 1895.
His Final Battle
On July 5, 1896, José Maceo was fighting Spanish forces. This was in the eastern part of Cuba. During the fierce battle, he suddenly fell from his horse. He had been badly wounded.
His doctor quickly came to help him. But there was no hope. José Maceo died a few hours later. He was 47 years old. His death left a big empty space in the Liberation Army. Because of his bravery and strength in battle, he was known as the "Lion of the East."
His body is buried in the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery in Santiago de Cuba.
