José Manuel Estepa Llaurens (January 1, 1926 – July 21, 2019) was an important leader in the Catholic Church from Spain. He served as the Military Archbishop of Spain from 1983 to 2003. He was later made a cardinal in 2010.

Life and Church Service

Early Life and Education

José Manuel Estepa Llaurens was born in Andújar, Spain, on January 1, 1926. He studied philosophy at the Pontifical University of Salamanca in Spain. He also studied theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. There, he earned a special degree in pastoral theology, which focuses on how to care for people in the church. In 1956, he received another degree in teaching catechesis, which is religious instruction, from the Institut Catholique de Paris in France.

Becoming a Priest and Early Roles

He became a priest on June 27, 1954. After this, he took on several important roles. From 1956 to 1960, he was a chaplain at a university residence in Madrid. He also taught at a seminary in Madrid from 1956 to 1964. He helped lead a department focused on priestly cooperation in Latin America from 1957 to 1961. He also worked with the Episcopal Council of Latin America (CELAM) from 1958 to 1967.

From 1965 to 1971, he was in charge of catechesis for the Spanish Episcopal Conference. This meant he helped guide religious education across Spain. He also advised the Congregation for the Clergy, a group in the Vatican.

Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop

On September 5, 1972, Pope Paul VI chose him to be an auxiliary bishop for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop of a large area. He was officially made a bishop on October 15, 1972. Cardinal Vicente Enrique y Tarancón, who was the Archbishop of Madrid, led this special ceremony.

Later, Pope John Paul II appointed him as the Ordinary of the Military Archbishopric of Spain on July 30, 1983. This role meant he was the main spiritual leader for military personnel and their families in Spain. He held this important position until he retired on October 30, 2003.

Work on the Catechism

During the 1980s and 1990s, he was part of a special group of six bishops. This group helped to create and edit the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This book explains the main beliefs and teachings of the Catholic Church. He also helped make sure the Spanish translation of the Catechism was correct.

Becoming a Cardinal

On November 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI made him a Cardinal-Priest. This is a very high honor in the Catholic Church. He was given the title of Cardinal-Priest of San Gabriele Arcangelo all'Acqua Traversa, a church in Rome. He was 84 years old when he received this honor.
