Calleja became a well-known journalist. He worked for CNN+, a news channel, from 1999 to 2010. He helped share important news with many people. Besides his work in television, he also taught others. He was a professor of journalism at Charles III University of Madrid. He helped train new journalists.

José María Calleja was also an activist. He worked against a group called ETA. This group caused violence in Spain for many years. Calleja was a strong voice for peace and against terrorism. He believed in solving problems without violence.

Later Years and Legacy

In March 2020, José María Calleja became sick. He was diagnosed with COVID-19. He passed away from the infection on April 21, 2020, at a hospital in Madrid. He was 64 years old. Calleja is remembered for his dedication to journalism and his efforts for a peaceful Spain.
