Jose Maria Heredia
José María Heredia

José María Heredia y Heredia (born December 31, 1803 – died May 7, 1839) was a famous poet from Cuba. Many people consider him the first Romantic poet in the Americas. He helped start the Romantic movement in Latin America. He is also known as "El Cantor del Niagara" (The Singer of Niagara) and is seen as one of the most important poets in the Spanish language. He has even been named the National Poet of Cuba.

Heredia studied at the University of Havana and became a lawyer in 1823. Later that year, he was arrested. He was accused of planning against the Spanish government because he supported Cuba's independence. He was told he had to leave the country forever. To avoid this, Heredia went to the United States. He lived in New York City for two years when he was 19. In 1825, he moved to Mexico. For a few months, he worked as an editor for a magazine called El Iris. He became a citizen of Mexico and got a job as a judge.

Many of his early poems were translations from French, English, and Italian. But his own poems, like Himno del desterrado (Hymn of the Exile) and the famous ode to Niágara, showed his unique style. One of his well-known poems was "En El Teocalli de Cholula." This poem explores the beauty of nature and ancient ruins. Heredia published his first collection of poems, Poesías, in New York in 1825. It was very popular in the Americas and Europe. Other famous writers, like Andrés Bello, praised his early talent and fresh poetry. He published a bigger second collection in Toluca in 1832. In 1836, he was allowed to visit Cuba for two months to see his mother. He returned to Mexico in January 1837 and passed away in Mexico City on May 7, 1839.

Early Life and Education

José María Heredia was born in Santiago de Cuba on December 31, 1803. His parents, José Francisco Heredia Mieses and Mercedes Heredia Campuzano-Polanco, were from Santo Domingo. When he was a young boy in Cuba, he learned to read and write Latin and Greek. He also translated works from famous ancient writers like Homer and Horace. He spent most of his childhood in Santo Domingo because his family moved there. His father became a judge in Caracas, so the family moved to Venezuela for his job.

He returned to Cuba from Venezuela in 1818. He then enrolled at the University of Havana at just 14 years old. He did not stay there for long. The next year, he continued his studies in Mexico. In 1820, his father, José Francisco Heredia, passed away. This led José María to return to Cuba from Mexico the following year.

Time in the United States

Heredia lived in the United States from December 4, 1823, to August 22, 1825. He left because Guadalupe Victoria, the president of Mexico, invited him to live permanently in Mexico. As a young man of 20, he traveled between cities like Boston, New York, New Haven, and Philadelphia. He stayed in homes with other Cuban exiles or visitors. Many Cubans he met wanted to leave the United States for any Spanish-speaking place not ruled by Spain.

Even though he did not become famous in North American literature at the time, his two years in the United States were very important for his major works. His love for freedom grew as he saw how free people lived there. He also learned to read English and tried to write like American authors. The nature in North America, especially Niagara Falls, greatly influenced his most famous poems. His time in the United States helped him connect with other readers who had similar experiences.

Romanticism in Heredia's Poetry

José María Heredia spent many years living away from his home country, Cuba, in the United States and Mexico. Many of his poems show a mix of tropical feelings and sad thoughts. These feelings often came from missing his homeland. The power and beauty of nature, along with a focus on individual feelings, are strong themes in his poems.

Latin American Romanticism has many features that can be found in Heredia's popular poems. These include:

  • Focusing on the feelings and experiences of one person.
  • A strong belief in personal and political freedom.
  • Showing deep emotions, which can include suffering.
  • Appreciating new topics in art and ideas, from the grand and ideal to the sad or unusual.
  • Using lyrical styles in music and poetry, often with dramatic personal feelings.
  • Showing sensitivity to nature, and caring for people who are poor or sick.
  • Including ideas or things that were seen as "exotic" from other parts of the world.

Some have said that "if the United States had Walt Whitman and Edgar Allan Poe, Latin America had the Cuban poet Heredia." This shows how important his poetry was. Being compared to these great American Romantic writers shows that his work had the style of Romanticism. His Romanticism was about searching and longing for freedom, both in politics and in writing. Because of this, his poetry directly reflected his own life.

Famous Poems

His most important poems are "En el Teocalli de Cholula" (which means "On the Teocalli of Cholula") and "Niagara." His poetry is still loved today because of its topics and the deep personal feelings he put into his works. Nature is shown in a Romantic way, reflecting his spiritual and emotional states. For him, nature was a symbol of freedom. In these poems, he praises the natural beauty of both North and South America. A key Romantic feature in Heredia's work is how his life is always part of his poetry. Also, his writings often include sad themes of death, sadness, and gloom.

"On the Teocalli of Cholula"

Heredia was very interested in the Aztec Ruins. This fits well with the themes of Romanticism. The ruins represent a mysterious past, bringing feelings of death and mystery from the Romantic Era. He wrote this poem after his father died in Mexico. In the poem, a voice feels sad watching the sunset over the valley of Anahuac. Then, it thinks about how the pyramid builders disappeared and how times have changed.

"Niagara"

Niagara Falls became easy for people to visit after the Erie Canal was finished in 1825. Its beauty attracted Romantic writers from many places who wanted to see this amazing natural wonder. Heredia stood in awe and "poured his troubled feelings into its powerful flow and fall." The poem "Niágara" was first published in Heredia's first collection, Poesías, in New York in 1825. The idea of a split or break in a relationship appears in "Niágara." This matches his feelings of being torn between different countries.
