Understanding Languages and People
José María Sánchez Carrión has done a lot of research into how languages are used in society. He looks at how people use two languages (bilingualism) and how languages come into contact. Some of his important early books include The Current State of Basque Language in Navarre (1970) and Language and People. He also wrote The Bilingual Space, which explores how different languages exist together.
Helping Languages Grow Stronger
Sánchez Carrión believes it's important for speakers of a language to stay connected. He has often talked about the need to bring Basque speakers together. He is known for supporting the idea of ecolinguistics, which looks at languages like living ecosystems. This means he studies how languages live, grow, and sometimes even die, just like plants or animals in an environment.
His most famous work is his doctoral thesis, A Future for Our Past (1987). This book has given many people who want to protect the Basque language a way to understand and guide their efforts. He also wrote about how history and languages are connected. In 1999, the Bilbao City Council published his book Sociolinguistic Application of Territoriality.
His Impact and Recognition
Other language experts have recognized Sánchez Carrión's important work. A well-known scholar named Koldo Mitxelena praised his contributions early on. His ideas are still valued today. For example, a Basque group called Garabide Elkartea shared his ideas at a United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues meeting in 2010. They presented a book called The Basque Experience, which uses a lot of his ideas about languages and society.
In 2013, he also published a book about religion and theology called Le code Jean le Baptiste (The John the Baptist Code).
