José María Sánchez Carrión facts for kids
José María Sánchez Carrión (born in 1952 in Cartagena, Spain) is a Spanish expert in languages. He specializes in the Basque language, how languages are used in society (called sociolinguistics), and how languages change over time (called historical linguistics). He has been a special member of Euskaltzaindia, which is like the official academy for the Basque language, since 1983.
Even though he is well-known for his ideas on helping languages that are losing speakers, he has never had a permanent job at a university in the Basque Country.
Early Life and Education
José María Sánchez Carrión is often called Txepetx, which means "Wren" (a small bird) in Basque. He studied languages at the University of Salamanca and later earned his doctorate in Basque language from the University of the Basque Country.
He has worked in many different places. He taught Spanish in Scotland, scientific English at the University of Granada, and Basque in a small school in Navarre. He also taught modern languages and literature in high schools in the Basque Autonomous Community and other parts of Spain.
Ideas About Language
Sánchez Carrión has written many important books and articles about how languages live and die. He tries to understand why some languages grow stronger while others disappear.
He has always believed that people who speak a language, like Basque, should stick together to help their language survive. His ideas have been used by people who fight for linguistic rights, which are the rights of people to use their own language.
One of his most famous works is his doctoral thesis, Un futuro para nuestro pasado (which means "A Future for Our Past"), published in 1987. This book gave many Basque language supporters a way to think about how to help their language. He also wrote about how languages and history are connected.
Since the mid-1980s, he has been a supporter of ecolinguistics. This is a way of looking at languages like living things in an environment, where they need certain conditions to thrive.
In 1999, the city of Bilbao published his book Aplicación sociolingüística de la territorialidad (meaning "Sociolinguistic Application of Territoriality"). This book explored how language use is connected to specific areas or territories.
His Importance
Many scholars, like Koldo Mitxelena, have said that Sánchez Carrión's work is very important for Basque studies. His ideas are still used today. For example, in 2010, a Basque group called Garabide Elkartea presented a book called The Basque experience at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. This book used a lot of Sánchez Carrión's ideas about how languages work in society.
In 2013, he published a book about religion and theology called Le code Jean le Baptiste (meaning "The John the Baptist Code").
