Life as a Bishop
José María Setién Alberro was a bishop during a challenging time in Spain. He often spoke about peace and understanding.
Important Decisions
In 1998, there was a time of peace, called a truce, with a group called ETA. During this time, Bishop Setién said that the Constitution of Spain should allow the Basque people to decide their own future. This idea is called "self-determination." He also offered to help people who were in jail for political reasons.
Working with the Church Leaders
Some of his ideas were not always popular with other church leaders. Pope John Paul II, who was the head of the Catholic Church at the time, shared his concerns with the bishops in Spain. Eventually, the main office of the Catholic Church, called the Holy See, got involved. Bishop Setién later stepped down from his role in 2000 because of health issues.
Books and Awards
In 2007, he wrote a book called Un obispo vasco ante ETA. This means "A Basque Bishop Facing ETA." In 2003, he received a special award, the Gold Medal of Guipúzcoa, which is a region in Spain.
Later Life
José María Setién Alberro passed away on July 10, 2018, when he was 90 years old. He had suffered a stroke.
