José María de Azcárate y Ristori (1919–2001) was a Spanish expert in art history. He was an author, researcher, and professor. He specialized in art from the Middle Ages and Renaissance sculpture.

José María de Azcárate was born on April 18, 1919. His birthplace was Vigo, a city in Spain. His father was a sailor. The family moved to Cádiz, another city in Spain, when José María was young.
He studied at the University of Seville. He also attended the University of Madrid. There, he studied Philosophy and Literature. He later earned a doctorate degree from the University of Madrid. A doctorate is a very high university degree. He was a student of Manuel Gómez-Moreno Martinez, a famous historian.
Azcárate wrote many books about art history. One of his most famous books was called History of Art. Many students studying philosophy and literature used this book. It was also known as El Azcárate. He also wrote the thirteenth volume of Ars Hispaniae. This was a book series about the history of Spanish art.
From 1973, Azcárate was a professor at the Complutense University of Madrid. He taught the history of medieval art. He continued teaching there until he passed away. He died on July 18, 2001, in Madrid, Spain. He was 82 years old.
Awards and Memberships
José María de Azcárate received many honors. In 1974, he became a member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He spoke about "El protogótico hispánico" when he joined. This means "Hispanic Proto-Gothic."
He was also a member of several other royal academies. These included academies in Valladolid, Seville, Toledo, A Coruña, Cadiz, and Barcelona.
In 1961, he won the National Prize for Literature (Spain). He received this award for his work on Alonso Berruguete. In 1991, the University of Alicante gave him an honorary doctorate degree. This is a special degree given to honor someone's achievements.
