Eymael's Political Journey
José Maria Eymael began his political career in 1962. He joined the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) in Porto Alegre. He was part of the Young Christian Democrats group.
Early Political Steps
The PDC party was closed down in 1965 during Brazil's military rule. It was later started again in 1985. Eymael played a key role in bringing the party back to life in the state of São Paulo.
In 1985, Eymael ran for mayor of São Paulo. He did not win the election. However, his campaign had a very catchy song. The chorus, "Ey Ey Eymael," became very popular. This jingle has been linked to him throughout his political life.
Serving in Congress
In 1986 and again in 1990, Eymael was elected to the Federal Deputy position. This is part of Brazil's National Congress of Brazil. He ran for mayor of São Paulo again in 1992 but was not elected.
In 1993, the PDC party joined with another party. They formed the Reform Progressive Party (PPR). Eymael did not agree with this merger. He left the PPR and, in 1995, he started his own party. This new party was called the PSDC, which later became the DC. He founded it based on family and religious values.
