Eymael's Political Journey
José Maria Eymael started his political career in 1962. He joined the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) in Porto Alegre. He was part of the Young Christian Democrats group.
The PDC party was closed down in 1965 during a time when Brazil was under military rule. Later, in 1985, the party was restarted. Eymael played a big part in getting it organized again in the state of São Paulo.
In 1985, Eymael ran to become the mayor of São Paulo. He didn't win the election. However, his campaign had a very catchy song with the words "Ey Ey Eymael." This song became very popular and has been linked to him throughout his political life.
Serving in Congress
In 1986, and again in 1990, Eymael was elected to the Federal Chamber of Deputies. This is like the lower house of Brazil's main law-making body, the National Congress of Brazil. He ran for mayor of São Paulo again in 1992 but did not win.
In 1993, the PDC party joined with another party to form the Reform Progressive Party (PPR). Eymael didn't agree with this merger, so he left the PPR. In 1995, he started his own party, the PSDC. This party focuses on family and religious values.
Key Achievements in Congress
As a member of Congress, Eymael was known as one of the most important lawmakers. He had 145 ideas approved during his time in the National Constituent Assembly. This assembly helped write Brazil's Constitution. Some of his approved ideas include:
- Making sure workers get a 30-day notice before losing a job.
- Setting a workweek of 44 hours for employees.
- Giving workers the right to have free time.
- Making sure taxes are not used to unfairly take people's money.
- Ensuring everyone pays fair taxes based on their situation.
- Making essential goods (like food) cheaper by lowering taxes on them.
- Requiring the government to support and encourage tourism. This helps the country's economy grow.
- Making sure government officials don't get paid more than allowed by law.
- Requiring governments to publish how much money they collect each month. This helps people see how public money is being used.
- Making it a duty for adult children to care for their parents if they are old, sick, or in need.
While working on the Constitution, Eymael also strongly argued for keeping the name of God in the introduction. He was against removing it.
