José Rodríguez de la Oliva was an important Spanish sculptor from the 1700s. He was born in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, which is one of the Canary Islands. Many people thought he was one of the best sculptors in the Canary Islands. He was also known by a fun nickname: "El Moño", which means "The Top Knot".

Life and Art of José Rodríguez de la Oliva

José Rodríguez de la Oliva was born on December 15, 1695. His hometown was San Cristóbal de La Laguna in Tenerife. He became famous for his amazing sculptures and paintings.

Famous Sculptures and Designs

Some of his most well-known sculptures include the image of Our Lady of Remedios. You can find this beautiful work in the Parish of San Marcos in Tegueste. He also designed a special silver piece called a Custody for the Church of Santo Domingo in La Laguna.

José Rodríguez de la Oliva created important statues of the Virgin of Candelaria. She is the patron saint of the Canary Islands. He also sculpted the Virgin of the Pine. In the Royal Convent of Our Lady of Candelaria, near the Basilica of Candelaria, you can see his statues of St. Dominic, St. Catherine of Siena, and St. Peter of Verona.

Portraits and Legacy

He also painted portraits. One famous painting was a "post-mortem" portrait of The Servant of God, Mary of Jesus de León y Delgado. This means he painted her after she had passed away. It is also believed he painted a portrait of the famous corsair Amaro Pargo during his lifetime. However, this painting is now missing.

José Rodríguez de la Oliva passed away on November 27, 1777, in his hometown. He was buried in what is now the Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. He is remembered as one of the three greatest artists of sacred art in Tenerife. The other two are Fernando Estévez and Cristóbal Hernández de Quintana. José Rodríguez de la Oliva was truly one of the most talented artists in the history of the Canary Islands.

José Rodríguez de la Oliva's Military Role

Besides being a great artist, José Rodríguez de la Oliva also had an important military career. On June 6, 1743, he became a Lieutenant in the Regiment of Outsiders. Later, on December 4, 1747, he was promoted to the rank of Captain. This shows he was a person with many different skills!
