José Segrelles Albert (born March 18, 1885 – died March 3, 1969) was a talented Spanish artist. He was known for his amazing paintings and illustrations. He was also the uncle of famous cartoonists Eustaquio and Vicente Segrelles.

The Life of José Segrelles

José Segrelles was born in Albaida, a town in Valencia, Spain, in 1885. He went to art schools in Valencia and Barcelona. His very first job was in a photography studio. There, he helped with lighting for pictures.

By 1926, Segrelles was already a well-known artist in Spain. He started learning English, thinking he might move to England. That same year, he had an art show in London. It didn't go very well at first.

However, on September 8, 1926, he got an offer from two British magazines. These were The Illustrated London News and The Sketch. Because his art appeared in The Sketch, he also got offers from magazines in Scandinavia. He became a regular artist for The Illustrated London News' Christmas specials from 1927 to 1934.

In 1927, Segrelles started talking with American publishers. The next year, he received an exciting offer. In October 1928, Segrelles moved to the Upper West Side in New York City. His first job there was for Redbook magazine. He also worked for The Cosmopolitan.

In 1930, he held his first art exhibition in America. At this time, Cosmopolitan was one of the most popular magazines. Segrelles' work was featured alongside other famous illustrators. In 1930, he met Joanne Cummings, who became his art model.

In 1931, Segrelles showed his art at the International Art Center Roerich Museum. American newspapers started using the term Blue Segrelles. This was because he often used dark blue colors in his paintings. It was a way to compare his style to another artist, Maxfield Parrish, who was known for his "Blue Parrish" works.

José Segrelles passed away in his hometown of Albaida in 1969.
