José Serrato (born September 30, 1868 – died September 7, 1960) was an important politician from Uruguay. He was elected as the 24th President of Uruguay. He was known for being a skilled Engineer and Economist.

Early Life and Political Start
José Serrato was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He became a key member of the Colorado Party. This political party was very powerful in Uruguay for a long time.
Serrato supported the ideas of José Batlle y Ordóñez. However, he was also seen as someone who could work with many different people. He was not stuck on just one way of thinking.
Roles in Government
Before becoming president, Serrato held important jobs in the government. He served as the Minister of Finance. He held this role twice: from 1904 to 1907 and again from 1911 to 1913. As Minister of Finance, he managed the country's money and economy.
President of Uruguay (1923-1927)
José Serrato became the President of Uruguay in 1923. He took over from Baltasar Brum. His time as president lasted for four years, until 1927.
Key Achievements as President
During his presidency, a very important building was officially opened. In 1925, President Serrato led the opening ceremony for the Palacio Legislativo. This is the building where Uruguay's laws are made. It is located in Montevideo.
After his term ended, Juan Campisteguy became the next president.
Life After the Presidency
Even after leaving the presidency, José Serrato continued to serve his country. From 1933 to 1934, he was the president of the Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay. This is Uruguay's main bank.
Later, he also served as Uruguay's Foreign Minister. In this role, he represented Uruguay to other countries. He worked under President Juan José de Amézaga.
José Serrato passed away in 1960. He lived for more than 30 years after his time as president.
