José de Canterac was a Spanish general with French origins. He played a big part in the Spanish American wars of independence, which were fought to decide if countries in South America would become independent from Spain. Canterac was born in France in 1786 and later moved to Spain. He died in Madrid, Spain, in 1835.

Early Military Career

José de Canterac joined the Spanish army in 1816. He became part of the forces led by General Pablo Morillo. Canterac took part in an important military trip against Isla Margarita, an island off the coast of Venezuela. This was one of his first experiences fighting in the Americas.

Leading the Spanish Army

By 1822, José de Canterac had become a Field Marshal. This was a very high rank in the army. He was given command of the entire Spanish Army in South America. His job was to try and keep the South American colonies under Spanish rule.

Key Victories

Canterac led his troops to several important wins. In 1822, he won the Battle of Ica in Peru. The next year, in 1823, he also won the Battle of Moquegua. These victories showed his skill as a military leader and helped the Spanish forces for a time.

Major Defeats

However, the tide began to turn against the Spanish. In 1824, Canterac faced two big defeats that changed the course of the war.

Battle of Junín

The first major defeat was at the Battle of Junín. This battle took place in Peru. Canterac's forces fought against the Patriot army, who were fighting for independence. The Patriots won this battle, which was a big setback for the Spanish.

Battle of Ayacucho

Soon after, Canterac's army faced another crucial battle: the Battle of Ayacucho. This battle was also fought in Peru and was one of the final battles of the war. The Patriot forces won a decisive victory. After this defeat, Canterac and his troops had to surrender to the Patriot leaders. This surrender marked the end of Spanish rule in much of South America.

Later Life and Death

After the wars ended, José de Canterac returned to Spain. He was still a respected military figure. He was made Captain General of Madrid, which was a very important position. Sadly, José de Canterac died in 1835 during an uprising in Madrid at a place called the Puerta del Sol.
