Josep Fontana i Lázaro (born November 20, 1931 – died August 28, 2018) was an important historian from Catalonia, Spain. He spent his life studying and teaching history.

Learning and Studies

Josep Fontana was born in Barcelona. He went to the University of Barcelona. In 1956, he earned his master's degree in philosophy and letters, focusing on history. Later, in 1970, he received his doctorate in history from the same university.

He learned from famous historians like Jaume Vicens i Vives and Ferran Soldevila. Fontana was very interested in economic history, which looks at how money and trade have shaped the past. He also studied Spanish history from the 1800s and the history of property. His ideas were also shaped by other thinkers like E.P. Thompson, Pierre Vilar, Gramsci, and Walter Benjamin.

His Work as a Historian

Dr. Fontana helped start and lead the Jaume Vicens i Vives University Institute of History. This is a special history institute at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. He taught classes there until he passed away. These classes included "Introduction to History" and "20th-century Spanish history."

He also taught at other universities. These included the University of Barcelona, the University of Valencia, and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He taught about economic history and how history, law, and economics are connected.

After 1970, Dr. Fontana wrote many articles for history magazines. One of these was l'Avenç. His book, Introduction to the Study of History, is used to teach students about history.
