Joseph Betts became a very important professor at the University of Oxford. In 1765, he was given a special job called the Savilian Chair of Geometry. This was a big honor for a mathematician.

Studying at Oxford

Before becoming a professor, Joseph Betts was a student at University College, Oxford. This is one of the colleges that make up Oxford University. After he finished his studies, he became a Fellow there. A Fellow is like a senior member of the college who helps with teaching and research.

While he was a Fellow, Betts also worked as a teacher, or tutor. One of his students was a famous scholar named William Jones.

Aiming for Another Role

Before he became the Savilian Professor of Geometry, Joseph Betts had tried for another important position. He wanted to become the Savilian Professor of Astronomy. This job was also at Oxford University and focused on the study of stars and planets. He had support from some important people, like powerful Earls, but he did not get that job.
