Joseph Fisher's Life

Early Life and Education

Joseph Fisher was born around 1655 in a place called Whitbridge, in Cumberland, England. He started studying at Queen's College, Oxford University in 1674. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), on May 8, 1679. Later, he received his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree on July 6, 1682. He also became a fellow (a senior member) of Queen's College.

Church Career

In 1695, after Christopher Harrison passed away, Joseph Fisher was given the job of rector (a main priest) at the church in Brough, also known as Burgh-under-Stanmore, in Westmorland. Before this, he had worked as a lecturer or curate (a priest who helps the main priest) in London. He lived in a merchant's house in Broad Street to be close to his work.

While in London, in 1695, he wrote a special letter to his former student, Thomas Lambard. This letter was an introduction to a sermon he had preached on January 27, 1694, in Sevenoaks, Kent. The sermon was about 'The Honour of Marriage.'

In 1702, a church leader named William Nicolson became the Bishop of Carlisle. Because of this, Joseph Fisher was chosen to be the Archdeacon of Carlisle on July 9, 1702. He was officially installed in this role on July 14. Along with being an Archdeacon, he also looked after the church of St. Cuthbert in Great Salkeld. He held both this position and his role at Brough until he passed away.

Joseph Fisher died early in 1705. He was buried in Brough. Another church leader, George Fleming (who later became Sir George Fleming, Bishop of Carlisle), took over as Archdeacon on March 28, 1705.
