Joseph Friedenson (born 1922, died 2013) was a very important person. He survived the Holocaust, a terrible time in history. He became a historian, which means he studied and wrote about the Holocaust. Joseph Friedenson was also a writer in Yiddish, a speaker, and the editor of a newspaper called Dos Yiddishe Vort .

Joseph Friedenson's Early Life
Joseph Friedenson was born in April 1922. His hometown was Łódź, a city in Poland. His father was Rabbi Eliezer Gershon. He was an important leader for a group called Agudath Israel in Poland. His father also edited a magazine called Beth Jacob Journal. This magazine helped guide schools for girls before World War II.
Joseph studied at a famous school called Yeshiva Chachmei Lublin.
Surviving World War II
When World War II began, Joseph's family had to leave their home. They went to Warsaw. Soon, they became prisoners in the Warsaw Ghetto. This was a part of the city where Jewish people were forced to live.
While in the ghetto, Joseph married Gittel Leah Zilberman. They were secretly helped to escape the ghetto. After that, they spent several years in a difficult work camp called Starchowicz.
Life in Concentration Camps
In July 1944, Joseph's family was sent to Auschwitz. This was a very dangerous place. Joseph had to go on what were called death marches. These were long, forced walks that were very hard. He was also held in other camps, like Ohrdruf and Buchenwald.
Finally, in April 1945, Joseph was freed from Buchenwald. The United States Army helped to free him.
Joseph's wife, Mrs. Friedenson, stayed in Auschwitz. She was freed by the Russian Army in early 1945. Joseph and his wife were reunited a few months later.
After the War
After the war, Joseph and his wife lived in Germany for several years. They worked to help other people who had survived the war. They helped them rebuild their lives.
In 1951, they moved to the United States. Joseph joined a group called Agudath Israel of America.
Joseph Friedenson's Writings
