Joseph Octave Nolin (born 1868 – died December 1925) was an important Canadian politician. He was one of the very first Métis people to become a MLA in Saskatchewan. An MLA is like a representative who helps make laws for a province.
Joseph Nolin was a member of the Liberal Party of Saskatchewan. He represented two different areas in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. From 1908 to 1917, he represented the area called Athabasca. He was the only person ever to represent this area. Then, from 1917 until 1925, he represented the Île-à-la-Crosse area.
Early Life and Family
Joseph Nolin was born in 1868 in Bottineau, North Dakota. His parents were Joseph Nolin and Marianne Gaudry. Later, his family moved to Manitoba, a province in Canada. Joseph and his brother Norbert eventually settled in Battleford, Saskatchewan.
Joseph Nolin was very good with languages. He could speak French, English, and the Cree language fluently. This skill would have been very helpful in his work as a politician.
In 1891, Joseph Nolin married Marie Villeneuve. They started their life together in Saskatchewan.
Work and Contributions
Before becoming a politician, Joseph Nolin was a farmer and rancher. He worked on his land near Meota and Jackfish Lake. These areas are known for their beautiful landscapes.
He also helped with important construction projects. He worked on building Saskatchewan Highway 4. This highway helps people travel across the province. Joseph Nolin also worked as a captain for the Battleford Steam Ferry. This ferry helped people cross the North Saskatchewan River before a bridge was built.
Joseph Nolin passed away in December 1925 in Regina. He was still serving as an MLA when he died.
