Taking Over the Business

In 1795, Joseph Storrs Fry took charge of his parents' chocolate business. It was then known as Anna Fry & Sons. He made a big change by inventing a new way to grind cocoa beans. He used a special machine called a Watt steam engine. This meant he could use factory methods to make chocolate. He built a new factory in Union Street, Bristol.

New Partnerships

Around 1800, Joseph Storrs Fry moved to a house called Grove House in Frenchay. In 1803, his mother Anna Fry passed away. Joseph Storrs Fry then teamed up with a Dr. Hunt. They changed the business name to Fry & Hunt.

Dr. Hunt retired from the business in 1822. Joseph Storrs Fry then brought his own sons into the company. His sons were Joseph (born 1795, died 1879), Francis (born 1803, died 1886), and Richard (born 1807, died 1878). They renamed the company J. S. Fry & Sons. Under this new name, it grew to be the largest chocolate maker in Britain.

Later Life and Legacy

Joseph Storrs Fry died in 1835. After his death, his sons took full control of the chocolate company. The business later passed to his grandson, Joseph Storrs Fry II (born 1826, died 1913).
