Joseph Vendryes (born January 13, 1875, in Paris – died January 30, 1960) was an important French linguist. A linguist is a scientist who studies human language. Vendryes was especially interested in Celtic languages. These are a group of languages like Irish, Welsh, and Scottish Gaelic.

He learned from another famous linguist, Antoine Meillet. Later, Joseph Vendryes became a professor of Celtic languages and literature at a special school in Paris called the École Pratique des Hautes Études. He also started a journal called Études Celtiques, which is still important for people studying Celtic languages today.

Vendryes was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, a group of experts in history and languages. He also helped create Interlingua, a language designed to be easy for people from different countries to understand.

His Ideas on Language

Vendryes believed that language is many things at once. He thought it was:

  • A physical act, because we use our mouths and bodies to speak.
  • A mental act, because we think and choose our words.
  • A social act, because we use language to talk to each other.
  • A historical fact, because languages have changed a lot over time.

Important Books

Joseph Vendryes wrote several key books that are still studied today. Here are some of them:

  • Grammar of Old Irish (1908) - This book helped people understand an old form of the Irish language.
  • Language: A Linguistic Introduction to History (1921) - In this book, he shared his ideas about what language is and how it connects to history.
  • The Religion of the Celts (1948) - This book explored the beliefs of the ancient Celtic people.
