Exploring the Maxcy Homestead

The Maxcy Homestead is found in a quiet village called South Union. It's on the east side of South Main Street. The main part of the house is a large, two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and is covered with horizontal wooden boards called clapboards.

The house is almost square, with windows and doors on three sides. The main entrance is on the south side. This door has decorative columns on each side. Above the door, there's a half-round window and a small pointed roof. Inside, the house still has almost all of its original wooden decorations. The rooms downstairs have beautiful carvings. The upstairs bedrooms have slightly simpler, but still lovely, finishes.

Who Lived Here?

The house was built in 1802 for Joseph Maxcy and his wife, Hannah. Joseph moved to the Union area in 1788. He came from Attleboro, Massachusetts, and was part of a new group of settlers in the town.

The Builder: Ebenezer Alden

The builder of the Maxcy Homestead was Ebenezer Alden. He was a very skilled "housewright," which is an old term for someone who designs and builds houses. One of Alden's most famous projects was the Montpelier mansion. This grand home belonged to General Henry Knox in Thomaston.

It's very likely that Alden used the same special carving tools for the Maxcy Homestead as he did for Montpelier. He also used them for his own house, which he built in 1797. Both the Maxcy Homestead and Alden's own house have similar artistic touches. This shows his unique building style.
