Josephine is a small, unincorporated community located in Baldwin County, Alabama, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a group of homes and businesses that is not officially a town or city with its own local government. Josephine is known for its quiet charm and some interesting local attractions.

A Look Back at Josephine's History

How Josephine Got Its Name

The community of Josephine was named after a girl named Josephine Ross. She was the daughter of the very first postmaster in the area. A post office served the community under the name Josephine for many years, from 1881 until 1959.

Famous Residents and Early Life

One famous person who had a summer home in Josephine was Raphael Semmes. He was a captain of a ship called the CSS Alabama during the American Civil War. This ship was known as a "commerce raider." This means it was a warship that attacked enemy merchant ships.

In 1898, the McPherson family bought the property where Semmes's home once stood. They opened a hotel there called the Mexiwana Hotel. It operated until 1935. Josephine also had a school that taught students from first to sixth grade between 1903 and 1917. There was even a bakery in the community before it moved to a nearby town called Foley.

Unique Local Landmarks

Near where the old Josephine post office used to be, there is a small sand mound. This mound was built by Native Americans who lived in the area a long time ago.

One of the most interesting sights near Josephine is Bamahenge. This is a full-scale replica of the famous ancient monument Stonehenge. But Bamahenge is made of fiberglass! It is located on the grounds of the Barber Marina, just outside of Josephine.
