Who Was Joshua W. Hill?
Joshua W. Hill was an American who lived in the 1800s. He was known for his travels and for taking on unusual roles. His most famous adventure was when he became the leader of Pitcairn Island.
Arriving on Pitcairn Island
In 1832, Joshua Hill arrived on Pitcairn Island. This island has a very unique history. It was first settled in the 1790s by British mutineers from a ship called HMS Bounty. Mutineers are sailors who rebel against their ship's captain. These mutineers were joined by some Tahitian people.
The descendants of these original settlers had actually moved away to Tahiti for a short time. This happened after the last of the original mutineers, John Adams, passed away. However, they had recently returned to Pitcairn Island.
Becoming the Island's Leader
When Hill arrived, the island community was still settling back in and things were a bit uncertain. Joshua Hill saw this as a chance to take charge. He managed to get himself elected as the "President" of the island. This meant he became the main leader for the small group of people living there.
He held this position for several years, from 1832 until 1838.
A Difficult Rule and His Removal
Over time, Hill's leadership became very strict and unfair. This is often called being "tyrannical." He started making very harsh rules and even put some of the island's residents in prison. His actions made life difficult for the people on Pitcairn Island.
Because of his unfair rule, the islanders decided they had had enough. In 1838, they removed him from power and made him leave the island. After Hill was gone, the descendants of the original settlers took control of their island once again.
Hill in Popular Culture
Joshua W. Hill's unusual story might have inspired a famous writer. He is thought to be the real-life person behind the character Butterworth Stavely. This character appears in a short story by Mark Twain called "The Great Revolution in Pitcairn."
