Joshua Winslow (born January 23, 1726 – died June 1801) was an important person in Nova Scotia, Canada. He was a soldier, a judge, and a political leader. From 1770 to 1772, he served as a representative for Cumberland County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. This was like being a member of parliament for the area. He was also the father of Anna Green Winslow.

Joshua Winslow's Early Life

Joshua Winslow was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. His parents were John Winslow and Sarah Peirce. He grew up and later became involved in military and public service.

Joining the Military

In 1745, Joshua Winslow became a lieutenant in William Pepperrell's regiment. A lieutenant is an officer who leads a small group of soldiers. His regiment took part in an attack on Louisbourg, an important French fort.

After Louisbourg was captured, Winslow was given a new job. He became the commissary general for British troops in Nova Scotia. This meant he was in charge of getting food and supplies for the soldiers.

Fighting in Father Le Loutre's War

Joshua Winslow also fought in Father Le Loutre's War. This was a conflict between the British and the Mi'kmaq and Acadians. During this war, he took part in the Battle at Chignecto.

In 1758, Joshua Winslow married his cousin, Anna Green. He became very involved in public life in Nova Scotia.

Working for the Government

Winslow and others asked for "representative government" in Nova Scotia. This meant they wanted people to elect their own leaders. He also served as a justice of the peace. A justice of the peace is a local official who helps keep order and deals with minor legal issues. He was also a lieutenant in the local militia, which was a group of citizens who could be called upon to defend their area.

In 1764, Joshua Winslow became a judge. He worked in the Inferior Court of Common Pleas. This court handled everyday legal cases.

During the American Revolution

When the American Revolution began, Winslow thought about moving back to Massachusetts. However, he decided to stay in Nova Scotia. He continued to serve the British government.

Later Years and Death

In 1782, Joshua Winslow moved to Quebec City. He was named the deputy paymaster for the British forces there. This meant he helped manage payments for the soldiers.

From 1791 to 1794, Winslow served as the receiver general for Lower Canada. This was a role where he collected money for the government. He passed away in Quebec in June 1801, at the age of 75, after being sick for some time.
