José María Bueno y Monreal (born September 11, 1904 – died August 20, 1987) was an important Spanish leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop of Seville from 1957 to 1982. In 1958, he was given the special title of Cardinal.

Early Life and Education

José María Bueno y Monreal was born in Zaragoza, a city in Spain. He went to university in Rome, Italy, studying at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Angelicum. These are special universities for people who want to become priests or work for the Church.

After his studies, he became a priest on March 19, 1927. For many years, until 1945, he taught at a seminary (a school for training priests) and a journalism school in Madrid. He also became a professor at a religious culture institute in Madrid in 1929.

Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop

On December 1, 1945, Pope Pius XII chose José María Bueno y Monreal to be the Bishop of Jaca. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Catholic Church who oversees a specific area called a diocese. He officially became a bishop on March 19, 1946.

Later, he became the Bishop of Vitoria in 1950. In 1954, he was named the Coadjutor Archbishop of Seville. This meant he was an assistant to the main Archbishop of Seville and was expected to take over the role later. At this time, he also received the title of Titular Archbishop of Antiochia in Pisidia.

Leading the Archdiocese of Seville

On April 8, 1957, José María Bueno y Monreal became the main Archbishop of Seville. He took over from Cardinal Pedro Segura y Sáenz. There were some disagreements between them about how to lead the Church in Seville.

In 1958, Pope John XXIII made him a Cardinal-priest. Cardinals are very important leaders in the Catholic Church, and they help the Pope.

Important Church Meetings

From 1962 to 1965, Cardinal Bueno y Monreal attended the Second Vatican Council. This was a very important meeting of Catholic bishops from all over the world. They discussed how the Church could better connect with the modern world. He even helped deliver one of the closing messages of the council.

He also took part in the meetings where a new Pope is chosen, called a papal conclave. He was one of the cardinals who voted in the conclaves of 1963, August 1978, and October 1978.

After serving for twenty-five years, he retired as Archbishop of Seville on May 22, 1982.

Later Life and Legacy

José María Bueno y Monreal passed away in Pamplona, Spain, when he was 82 years old. He is buried in the Seville Cathedral, a famous and beautiful church in Seville.
