José Enrique Benito y Emeterio Ysbert Alvarruiz (born March 3, 1886, died November 28, 1966) was a famous Spanish actor. He was often known as José Isbert or Pepe Isbert. He was born and passed away in Madrid, Spain.

Biography
Early Life and Family
In 1903, José Isbert worked for the government at the Court of Accounts. However, he soon decided to follow his dream of acting. That same year, he made his first appearance on stage. This happened at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid. He acted in a play called El iluso Cañizares. When he started acting, he changed the spelling of his last name from Ysbert to Isbert. Later, he moved to the Teatro Lara, another famous theater, where he became very successful.
José Isbert was married to Elvira Soriano. They had a daughter, María Isbert, who also became a well-known actress. His grandsons, Tony Isbert and Carlos Ysbert, also followed in his footsteps. Carlos Ysbert is famous for being the Spanish voice of Homer Simpson!
A Long Acting Career
José Isbert started his film career in 1912. His first movie was a short film called Asesinato y entierro de Don José Canalejas. In this film, he played Manuel Pardiñas, a real-life anarchist.
During the time of silent movies, he mostly worked in theater. He had smaller roles in films. But when sound movies arrived, he made a big return to the screen. This happened in 1931 with the comedy La pura verdad.
In the 1930s, he acted in several films. Some of these included ¿Cuándo te suicidas? (1931) and La bien pagada (1935). He also appeared in El bailarín y el trabajador (1935).
He became very popular in the 1940s. He starred in films like Te quiero para mí (1944) and El testamento del virrey (1944). Other popular movies were Ella, él y sus millones (1944) and El fantasma y doña Juanita (1945).
Most Famous Roles
José Isbert is best remembered for his films from the 1950s and 1960s. He worked with famous director Luis García Berlanga on several classic movies. These include Welcome Mr. Marshall! (1953), Los jueves, milagro (1957), and El verdugo (1963).
He also starred in the dark comedy El cochecito (1960). All these memorable films were written by Rafael Azcona.
Another very popular role was the grandfather in the Spanish classic La gran familia (1962). He also appeared in its sequel, La gran familia... y uno más (1965). These movies made him even more beloved by audiences.
Pepe Isbert passed away in Madrid at the age of 80. He died from a heart condition. He was buried in the cemetery of Tarazona de la Mancha.
