José Luis Artetxe was born in a town called Algorta in Biscay, Spain. He started his professional football journey with CD Getxo, a team close to his hometown.
Joining Athletic Bilbao
In 1950, Artetxe joined Athletic Bilbao, a very well-known football club. He stayed with this club for the rest of his 16-year career. His first game in La Liga, Spain's top football league, was on September 10. Athletic Bilbao won that game 4–0 against Atlético Madrid.
Winning the League Title
During the 1955–56 season, Artetxe played a big part in his team's success. He played in 24 games and scored 15 goals. His efforts helped Athletic Bilbao win their sixth league championship.
A Club Legend
Artetxe played many games at the San Mamés Stadium, which was Athletic Bilbao's home ground. Overall, he played 346 matches and scored 133 goals for the club. He also helped his team win the Copa del Generalísimo (now known as the Copa del Rey) three times. He even scored a goal in the 1956 final, which Athletic Bilbao won 2–1 against Atlético Madrid. First International Game
His first game for Spain was on March 17, 1954. It was a qualifying match for the 1954 FIFA World Cup against Turkey. The game ended in a 2–2 draw in Rome. Artetxe scored the first goal of that match. This was the third time Spain and Turkey played each other in the qualifiers. Turkey eventually went to the World Cup finals after a special drawing of lots.
Later Life and Passing
