José Manuel Broto Gimeno was born in 1949 in Zaragoza, Spain. He is a very well-known Spanish painter. His art often combines careful thought with a look of being spontaneous.

José Manuel Broto studied art at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Zaragoza. This is a school for arts and crafts in Zaragoza. He showed his paintings for the first time in 1969.

In 1972, he moved to Barcelona. There, he helped start a group of artists called the Trama Group. He worked with other artists like Grau, Rubio, and Tena. Later, in 1985, he moved to Paris, France. He lived there for ten years. In Paris, he met other Spanish artists. These included Miquel Barceló, Miguel Angel Campano, and José María Sicilia.

After his time in Paris, Broto moved to Mallorca, an island in Spain. He has shown his art all over the world. His paintings have been seen in big cities like Helsinki and New York City. They have also been displayed in important art galleries across Spain.

Awards and Recognition

José Manuel Broto has won several important awards for his art. In 1995, he received the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas de España. This is the National Prize of Plastic Arts of Spain. It is a very high honor for artists in Spain.

He also won the Premio ARCO de la Asociación de Críticos in 1997. This award comes from art critics. In 2003, he was given the Premio Aragón Goya de Grabado. These awards show how important his work is in the art world.
