José María Sicilia
José María Sicilia, a famous Spanish painter.

José María Sicilia is a famous Spanish painter. He was born in 1954. He is known for his abstract art, which means his paintings don't always show things exactly as they look. Today, he lives in Paris, France, and Sóller, Spain.

About José María Sicilia

José María Sicilia was born in Madrid, Spain. He grew up during a time when General Franco ruled Spain. When he was young, he spent holidays near the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains.

In 1975, he started studying art in Madrid. In 1980, he moved to Paris, France. This is where he first showed his paintings. Later, in 1985, he moved to New York City. There, he became good friends with a composer named John Cage.

His early paintings showed a style called Expressionism. This style often uses strong colors and shapes to show feelings. In the 1980s, many people saw him as one of Spain's most exciting young artists.

Sicilia is famous for his paintings inspired by nature. He paints landscapes, insects, and flowers. He has traveled a lot, visiting places like Morocco, India, and Syria. These trips often inspire his artwork. He is also known for using unusual methods, like mixing wax with lithography (a type of printing).

His art has been shown in many important places. These include the Musee d’Art Contemporain in Bordeaux and the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Caen. He also showed his work at the Venice Biennale in 1986. His art has been displayed in Japan many times. He had exhibitions in Nagasaki, Kyoto, and Tokyo. More recently, he showed art in Fukushima after the big earthquake and tsunami there in 2011.

In 1989, he received a special award. It was the National Award for Plastic Arts from the Spanish government.
