Life of a Creative Architect
José María Manuel Cortina Pérez was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1868. He studied architecture in two big Spanish cities: Madrid and Barcelona. After finishing his studies, he returned to his hometown.
Working in Valencia
In Valencia, he became a city architect. This meant he helped design and plan buildings for the city. But he also got many important jobs from churches and private people. He designed interesting things like tombs, summer houses, and special shrines.
Famous Dragon Houses
One of his most famous designs is the Building of the Dragons in Valencia. It was built in 1901. This building mixes different styles, like Moorish and Gothic, with ideas from medieval times. It even has special castle-like tops called crenellations and dragon statues! That's how it got its name.
Cortina Pérez designed another similar building in 1903 in Ceuta. This one also became known as the House of the Dragons. Sadly, its original dragons were removed. But don't worry, new ones were designed and put back in 2006!
Awards and Recognition
Throughout his career, Cortina Pérez won many awards. He became a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos of Valencia. He also received a special honor called the Order of Isabella the Catholic. He passed away in 1950.
Cortina Pérez's Legacy
José María Manuel Cortina Pérez's unique building designs are still highly respected today. In March 2013, a special exhibition was held to show his work. It took place at the Palacio del Marques de Dos Aguas de Valencia, a beautiful palace in Valencia.
