His Early Life and Studies
José María Usandizaga was born in San Sebastián, a city in Spain. He started learning music there when he was young. Later, he moved to Paris, France, to study at a famous music school called the Schola Cantorum.
In Paris, he learned how to compose music from a well-known teacher named Vincent d'Indy. He also took piano lessons from Gabriel Grovlez. These studies helped him become a skilled musician.
Returning to Spain and Success
After his studies, Usandizaga returned to Spain in 1906. He quickly became successful with his musical works. He wrote many pieces, especially for plays and operas.
Sadly, José María Usandizaga passed away in 1915 from tuberculosis. He was only 28 years old, but he left behind a wonderful collection of music.
His Music and Main Works
Most of Usandizaga's music was inspired by Basque themes and culture. He wrote different kinds of pieces, including:
- Chamber pieces: These are musical works for a small group of instruments.
- Rhapsodies: These are single-movement musical pieces that are often free in form and show a lot of emotion.
He is most famous for his works for the stage, which include operas and zarzuelas.
- Mendi Mendiyan ("High in the Mountains") was a folk opera. An opera is a play where the story is told mostly through singing, with music played by an orchestra. This opera was sung in the Basque language.
- Las golondrinas ("The Swallows") was originally a zarzuela. A zarzuela is a Spanish musical play that mixes singing with spoken dialogue. After Usandizaga passed away, his brother changed "Las golondrinas" into a full opera.
- La llama ("The Flame") was another opera he was working on. He couldn't finish it before he died, but his brother completed it for him.
