José Pedro Varela is a small city located in the southeastern part of Uruguay. It's in the northern area of the Lavalleja Department. The city is named after a very important person in Uruguay's history, José Pedro Varela. He was a sociologist, someone who studies how people live together in groups, and a politician, who helps run the government.

Where is José Pedro Varela?
José Pedro Varela is easy to find on a map! It sits right next to Route 8, an important road in Uruguay. The city is also located on the banks of a stream called Arroyo Corrales. This stream forms the border with the Treinta y Tres Department.
The city is about 27 kilometers (17 miles) south of the city of Treinta y Tres. It's also about 135 kilometers (84 miles) northeast of Minas, which is the capital city of the Lavalleja Department.
How José Pedro Varela Grew
The area where José Pedro Varela is today started as a small populated place on August 24, 1898. Over time, it grew bigger and more important.
- On February 1, 1918, it was officially recognized as a "Pueblo," which means a village.
- Later, on October 16, 1958, its status was upgraded to "Villa," meaning a town.
- Finally, on November 19, 1967, José Pedro Varela officially became a "Ciudad," which means a city. This shows how much it had grown and developed over the years!
