Life and Political Work
José Perelló Torrens was the first and only mayor in Tormos elected by the people in the 20th century, before democracy returned in 1978. He belonged to the Acción Republicana (AR) and Izquierda Republicana (IR) parties. These parties were founded by Manuel Azaña.
Actions During the Spanish Civil War
During the tough years of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), José Perelló Torrens acted in an amazing way. He made sure that no one in Tormos was killed violently. This was even noted in official records after the war.
One of his most important actions was hiding a group of Carmelitas nuns in a Tormos house. These nuns had come from Denia at the start of the Civil War because they were in danger. He also protected the local priest and the town's wealthiest people. He bravely stood up to criminals from a labor union who wanted to harm them.
After the War and Recognition
After the Civil War ended, José Perelló Torrens was arrested by the local leader of the Falange party and sent to a prison camp. However, a priest from Tormos, Luis Ripoll Ginestar, helped him get released from the Porta-Coeli camp in Valencia, saving his life.
In November 2009, his great-grandson received a special recognition from the Spanish government. This was part of a law to honor people who were unfairly treated or hurt during the Civil War and the time after it. Other famous people like Miguel Hernández and Lluís Companys also received this honor.
In November 2011, the Tormos city council decided to name a new street "Alcalde José Perelló Torrens." This was a way to remember and honor his important work for the town.
Travel and Family
José Perelló Torrens once traveled to America. He arrived at Ellis Island in New York on February 14, 1917. He sailed there on a ship called "Antonio Lopez" from the port of Valencia.
His son, José Perelló Ballester (1913–1939), joined the army in August 1936. He fought in several important battles during the Civil War, including the Battle of Sigüenza and the Battle of Guadalajara. In Guadalajara, he fought against Italian soldiers sent by Benito Mussolini. He later became a Lieutenant in the army in August 1938.
