Early Life and Career
José de Grimaldo was born in Madrid in 1660. His family was quite wealthy. They had a lot of experience working in the government of Spain's colonies.
In 1683, José became a member of the Order of Santiago. This was a special honor given to him because of his family's background. He started to be seen as a rising politician. However, he did not get a major government job until the 1690s. This was when the old royal family line ended.
Spain During Wartime
Grimaldo became a supporter of a politician named Jean Orry. Orry arrived in Madrid in 1695. Grimaldo soon found a job in the Ministry of War and Finance. He kept this important position throughout the War of the Spanish Succession. This war was a big conflict that lasted from 1701 to 1714.
Leading the Government
First Time as Chief Minister
Grimaldo became the Secretary of State for the first time in 1714. This was a very difficult period for Spain. The country had been forced to give up large amounts of land. They lost territory in Italy to Austria. They also lost Minorca and Gibraltar to Britain.
Grimaldo worked hard to make Spain strong again. He helped to rebuild the country's army and navy. These efforts were very important for Spain's future.
Later Years and Retirement
In 1724, King Philip V briefly stepped down from his throne. Some people thought he wanted to claim the French throne. When the King left office, Grimaldo also left his position.
The King returned to power after only one year. Grimaldo came back to government with him. However, Grimaldo's health was getting worse. He was soon forced to retire from his government duties. In 1733, he was given the title of Marquess. He died in the same year at the age of seventy-three.
