José de Mora (1642–1724) was a very talented Spanish sculptor. He was known for creating beautiful religious statues. His artworks are important examples of the Baroque art style in Spain.
José de Mora was born in Baza, a town in Granada. His father, Bernardo de Mora, was also a sculptor. José learned a lot from his father. Later, he studied with famous artists like Alonso Cano in Granada and Sebastián de Herrera in Madrid.
In 1669, José de Mora moved to Madrid. There, he worked with Sebastián de Herrera Barnuevo. In 1672, he became a sculptor for the king, Charles II. This was a very important job! He returned to Granada in 1680. José de Mora passed away in Granada in 1724. He was buried in a convent there.
Some of his amazing early works can be seen in the Mosque-Cathedral in Córdoba. He made eight statues for a special chapel there. You can also see his statues of Saint Bruno and Saint Joseph at the Charterhouse near Granada.
His most famous work is the sculpture called Christ of Salvation. It is now known as Christ of Mercy. He made it for a chapel in the Church of St. Gregory Baeticus in Granada. For a long time, no one knew much about how this great sculpture came to be. But in 2018, an art historian named Dr. José Antonio Díaz found documents that told the whole story! Another important work by José de Mora is Our Lady of Sorrows. It was made for a church in Granada and is now in the Church of St. Anne.
