Joy Farm, also known as the E. E. Cummings House, is a special old farm in Silver Lake, New Hampshire. It's part of the town of Madison, New Hampshire. This farm is famous because it was the summer home of a well-known American poet named E. E. Cummings.
In 1971, Joy Farm was named a National Historic Landmark. This means it's a very important place in American history.
Who Was E. E. Cummings?
Edward Estlin Cummings (1894–1962), known as E. E. Cummings, was a famous American poet. He was also a painter and writer. He is known for his unique style of writing poetry.
Cummings often used unusual ways to arrange words and letters. He also used lowercase letters for his name. He wrote many poems about love, nature, and life.
A Poet's Summer Home
E. E. Cummings' parents bought Joy Farm in 1899. It is located near Silver Lake. The farm was purchased from a person named Ephraim Joy.
In 1929, Cummings' mother gave him the farm. He loved spending his summers there. He visited Joy Farm every summer until he passed away in 1962.
In September 1962, Cummings was at the farm when he became ill. He died the next day at a hospital nearby.
What Does Joy Farm Look Like?
The property at Joy Farm includes a main house and a barn. There is also a small, two-story tower with eight sides.
The main house is a one-and-a-half story building. It has a special roof that slopes down on two sides. Part of the roof was changed to add a deck.
The front of the house has five openings on the first floor. There are two windows on each side of the main door. The door has narrow windows next to it. A porch deck covers the entrance. This deck can be reached from an upper window.
The barn is located just north of the main house.
